Alaska Railroad RF1Class Streamlined Diesel-Electric Locomotive

The Alaska Railroad's RF1 Class streamlined diesel-electric locomotives were 1,000 hp units rebuilt from Alco RSD-1 road switchers.

After World War II the Alaska Railroad added a number of 1,000 horsepower Alco RSD-1 road switcher locomotives to their roster. Needing streamlined locomotives for their popular Aurora passenger trains, they began a rebuild program to enclose the car bodies on two of the RSD-1s in 1947 at their Anchorage shop. These rebuilt streamlined locomotives were classified 1050A for the cab locomotive and 1051B for the cabless unit.

The Puget Sound Bridge and Dry Dock Company of Seattle was then given orders to convert seven more RSD1 locomotives into streamlined A units and were called Alaska RR class RF1. Built during 1949-50, the rebuilt units were converted to two axle B-B trucks and given a smoother streamlined appearance, but kept their 75:16 double reduction gears. The rebuilt locomotives weighed 253,700 lbs. RF1A cab units were assigned even numbers (1052, 1554, 1070, 1072, 1074, 1076, 1078). It is unknown why the numbers were not in sequence.

Eight cabless B units were also built and classified RF1B. These units were built at either the Puget Sound Bridge and Dry Dock Company or the railroad's own Anchorage shop, however it remains uncertain as to where the rebuilds actually took place as a fire at the Anchorage Shop in 1951 destroyed all of the records. The cabless units were given odd numbers (1053, 1055, 1057, 1065, 1067, 1069, 1075, 1077). As before, the reason for the out of sequence road numbers is not known.

Sadly, no RF1s survived.
