GEIR 175-Ton Transfer Locomotive

The GEIR 175-ton transfer locomotive was built by General Electric and Ingersoll-Rand for the Illinois Central Railroad and numbered 9200. A total of 1,800 hp was realized through two I-R 900 hp four-stroke engines that were direct coupled to two International G.E.C. DC generators. These in turn provided power to the traction motors. The locomotive's maximum speed was 60 mph with maximum tractive effort at 80,000 lbs. Some specs show the service weight at 143 tons.

The GEIR 175-ton was one of three transfer locomotive demonstrators supplied to the Illinois Central Railroad in the mid-thirties, each of different design.
